Atlantis link with ISS

Space shuttle Atlantis docked with the International Space Station(ISS) at 15:07 GMT yesterday, on its final visit to the orbiting outpost as the US prepares to wrap the shuttle programme.
Before connecting with the ISS, the venerable vehicle did the customary back flip to allow station crew to photograph its heat shield. The snaps will be sent to ground controllers to check for any damage.
Atlantis is carrying the Raffaello multipurpose logistics module, loaded with spares and supplies. Pilot Doug Hurley and mission specialist Sandy Magnus will today use the ISS's Canadarm2 robot limb to shift the module from the shuttle's cargo bay to the station's Harmony node.
Ground-based flight controllers, meanwhile, are monitoring reports from the US Department of Defense’s Strategic Command that a piece of Soviet satellite COSMOS 375 may pass close to the ISS tomorrow afternoon.
NASA said yesterday: "The team expected updated tracking information following today’s docking to help determine if a maneuver using the shuttle’s thrusters is necessary to avoid the debris."

Meditation can change brain activity

Anderson, who did research on Meditation as an undergraduate student, together with a team of University of Wisconsin-Stout faculty and students, wanted to know if there was a change in brain activity after a shorter period.

At the beginning of the new study, each participant had an EEG, a measurement of the brain’s electrical activity, according to a Wisconsin university statement.
Then a group was invited to take part in meditation training, while the other group was told they would be trained later. The group was offered two half-hour sessions a week, and encouraged to practise as much as they could between sessions, but there wasn’t any particular requirement for how much they should practice.
People who had done the meditation showed a greater proportion of activity in the left frontal region of the brain, in response to subsequent attempts to meditate, as compared to the group which did not meditate.
One of experience, the Landscape artist Jane Anderson struggled with seasonal affective disorder in the winter months. She tried meditation and noticed a change within a month.
“My experience was a sense of calmness, of better ability to regulate my emotions,” she says. Her experience inspired a new study which found changes in brain activity after only five weeks of meditation training, the journal Psychological Science reports.
